The Benevolent Society one dollar coin was issued in 2013 to commemorate two hundred years since the founding of Australia's first charity organisation. The reverse features A. Baggio's interpretation of the Society's original logo with an inner legend "THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY - FOUNDED 1813 - INCORPORATED 1902". The reverse legend states "200 YEARS OF CARING FOR AUSTRALIANS - ONE DOLLAR". The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the legend and denomination"ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA 2013".

Edward Smith Hall was founded in 1813 as the 'NSW Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and Benevolence'. In 1818 the charity was renamed to the 'Benevolent Society of NSW' and ceased to be a religious organisation. (Benevolent Society, 2017) Since its foundation, the Benevolent Society has worked tirelessly for Australians pioneering free maternity care, legal aid, and also campaigning for the abolition of child labour and the introduction of the old age pension. Today the organisation continues to provide Australians with valuable services relating to mental health, domestic violence, child services, elderly care, and more. (Benevolent Society, 2017)
