The Benevolent Society one dollar coin was issued in 2013 to commemorate two hundred years since the founding of Australia's
first charity organisation. The reverse features A. Baggio's interpretation
of the Society's original logo with an inner
legend
"THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY - FOUNDED 1813 - INCORPORATED 1902". The reverselegend
states "200 YEARS OF CARING FOR AUSTRALIANS - ONE DOLLAR". The obverse
features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the
legend
and denomination"ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA 2013".
Edward Smith Hall was founded in 1813 as the 'NSW Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and Benevolence'. In 1818
the charity was renamed to the 'Benevolent Society of NSW' and ceased to be a religious organisation.

Since its foundation, the Benevolent Society has worked tirelessly for Australians pioneering free maternity care, legal
aid, and also campaigning for the abolition of child labour and the introduction of the old age pension. Today the organisation
continues to provide Australians with valuable services relating to mental health, domestic violence, child services, elderly
care, and more.
